Letter of Support from Erin Brown - Team Leader of MSF

Posted by admin under Medecins Sans Frontieres, Testimonials

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am pleased to have the privilege to write a letter in support of Josephine Tsui’s application to your program in Civic Leadership. I have known Josephine for 2 years in her work as the Calgary Co-Chair for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders/MSF). MSF is an international independent medical relief organization providing emergency relief in areas with inadequate medical infrastructure to support local need in times of crisis. The role of volunteers in Calgary is to recruit medical volunteers for overseas duty, act as advocates for MSF, and inform the public of the plight of populations MSF is assisting. Co-Chairs have the additional duties of mobilizing local volunteers, organizing events, and communicating with regional and national divisions of MSF.

Josephine’s intelligence is evident in the clear, concise, and perceptive manner in which she communicates with others, whether they are peers, co-volunteers, or authority figures. I believe her intellectual promise to be considerable, as she possesses remarkable intelligence combined with a strong desire to learn, and is highly motivated to pursue intellectual challenges, such as independent research projects in the health sciences.

Motivation has been a marked characteristic in Josephine’s involvement in civic affairs. She founded the Calgary chapter of MSF, which involved contacting national staff, recruiting dozens of volunteers from the Calgary area, and seeking out opportunities for MSF to participate in community events. During the summer of 2002, she was responsible for organizing the role of MSF in the G6B Summit, a conference paralleling the G8 Summit being held at the same time in Calgary that was attended by thousands at the University of Calgary. Her commitment to the organization has extended past the two years (2000-2002) she served as Co-Chair, as she has continued to be an active volunteer with and advisor to the group despite her numerous additional commitments and responsibilities. Although Josephine was a superb Co-Chair for the group during her years volunteering with MSF, her contributions in every additional role from manning information booths to contacting media to attend press conferences held by MSF have been invaluable.

Josephine’s potential for community and civic leadership is remarkable, as she is sincerely passionate about her involvement with such groups, and her commitment matches this passion. Her heartfelt enthusiasm for every task she undertakes is contagious to and appreciated by all who work with her and is the main factor contributing to the effectiveness of her leadership. In addition to her dedication and keen interest in civic issues, Josephine possesses the aptitude to excel in any leadership related role she embarks upon.

Yours sincerely,

Erin Brown
Co-Chair, Calgary Chapter Médecins Sans Frontières
