Re: Letter for Sauvé Scholars Program February 18, 2009

To Whom It May Concern:

Josephine and I met six years ago at the University of Calgary (U of C) where we were both undergraduate science students who dreamed of creating positive change in our local and global communities. She and I have formally worked with Engineers Without Borders in Calgary specifically on the SCALA Project. Through this project, Josephine demonstrated her exceptional communication and leadership abilities.

Engineers Without Border’s (EWB) Scala Project has contributed to improving the livelihoods and employment opportunities of over 2,400 underprivileged youths in the Philippines with the implementation of 27 Computer Livelihood Training Centres (CLTC) in communities across the country. These CLTCs have enabled underprivileged Filipino youth to acquire new skills and knowledge, develop self confidence, and gain access to a network in the community and other resources. In the summer of 2003 I was selected for an overseas placement in the Philippines to build CLTC and I returned taking over from Jared Houstin the project leader of the Scala program in Calgary.

Josephine, one of the first non-engineers to join EWB, encouraged many U of C students (including myself) to get involved in global issues and make difference. Fortunately, I had Josephine on my team who helped solicit 50 computer donations and raise $15,000. Josephine was involved in all aspect including logistics meetings, advertising, volunteer recruitment, fundraising drives, and a weekend long computer packing drive (where she worked day and night to prepare the computers for shipment to the Philippines).

The local efforts of EWB volunteers like Josephine to fundraise money and computers has been essential to the success of this program.

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter in support of Josephine Tsui and her candidacy for the prestigious Sauvé Scholars Program, as she is not only someone who motivates others to take initiative, but also has the vision, imagination, and strong desire required to change the world for the better.

Sincerely,

Daniel Charlebois
President of EWB-Calgary 2005-2006
